Eskdale is home to the famous Ravenglass & Eskdale narrow gauge steam railway, known as the “Ratty” or “La’Al Ratty”, which starts from Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast and ends at Dalgarth (Boot) in Eskdale.  Irton Road station is down a short lane opposite the house.

Rockwood welcomes pets and responsible pet owners.  The house is locates on the edge of the village of Eskdale Green.  There is a well-stocked local shop and two pubs (“The Bower House” and the King George IV”) within easy walking distance.

Setting & gardens

Much of Rockwood’s charm arises from its site - an elevated position on a hillside providing views across fells and fields and a quiet location set well back from, and above, the road through Eskdale Green.

Gardens

Rockwood is set in approximately an acre of terraced gardens on a steep hillside planted with an abundance of shrubs and herbaceous plants. Paths wind through the garden leading to seating areas with views over the surrounding fells and countryside.  Red squirrels have been spotted in the garden (as well as sheep).

Views from house & garden

The house and gardens have pleasing views in all directions - south towards Birker and Muncaster Fells and south-west along the course of the River Mite towards the Ravenglass estuary and sea.  Upper Eskdale and Harter Fell can be glimpsed from the garden to the east and Irton Fell to the north.

Steam railway

Rockwood is situated opposite Irton Road station on the narrow-gauge Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (“La’al Ratty”).  There are regular services between Ravenglass on the coast (with mainline connections to Carlisle and Lancaster) and Dalegarth (Boot) in Eskdale.  The steam services are always popular with train enthusiasts and can be combined with walks to provide additional flexibility (eg out on foot, back by train).

Access to the house

A short, smooth but fairly steep gravel path leads up to the house from a parking area at the front gate.  There are also steps.  There is off-road parking for one large vehicle (eg an estate car or 4x4) near the gate with additional parking in the village (400 yards along the lane).

Note that young children may require supervision in the garden because of the relatively steep terrain, stone steps and rocks (all slippery in the wet).

Please be aware of these factors when considering whether Rockwood would be suitable for your party.  If you have any questions please contact us (see Contact us page).
